June 17, 2004, Speakers, their topics and
bio info
1. Dave Cohn, Themis, Inc.
TITLE: “DB2 zOS Version 8: New Features No One’s Talking
About”
SYNOPSIS:
Version 8 is a feature rich release of DB2. Many new features have been
overshadowed by enhancements related to exploiting the 64 bit architecture
and increasing commonality between DB2 platforms. This presentation
explores the details of some of the new features that have not received
as
much exposure as other enhancements.
During this presentation we shall examine our ability to alter column
type
definitions, and also the capability to do multi-row fetches and inserts
in
a single SQL statement. The new GET DIAGNOSTICS statement will be explained
as will the ability to incorporate scalar fullselects almost anywhere
an
expression can be used in an SQL statement. Materialized Query Tables
will
also be covered.
SPEAKER BIO:
Themis full-time instructor, David Cohn, has been working in the Data
Processing field since 1967. He first started working with DB2 in 1984.
He
has been a Themis instructor since 1996, specializing in teaching DB2.
David has presented several papers at IDUG conferences.
2. Marty Lurie, IBM
TITLE: “DB2, Websphere, and Information Integrator”
SYNOPSIS:
How do you generate a J2EE application to access multiple remote data
sources, get optimal performance, and not hire hundreds of programmers?
This talk will show the leading technologies for developing and deploying
browser based applications that join DB2, Oracle, Informix etc with
very
rapid time to market. We'll look at the architecture and then dive all
the
way down to cost optimization of the joins requested by the Web Application
Server middle tier. The first 30 people to sign up will receive free
disks
with trial copies for both Linux and Windows including: Websphere Server,
Websphere Studio, DB2, and more.
SPEAKER BIO:
Marty Lurie started his computer career generating chads while attempting
to write Fortran on an IBM 1130. His title is Information Technology
Specialist, DB2 and Informix, but if pressed he will admit he mostly
plays
with computers. His favorite program is the one he wrote to connect
his
Nordic Track to his laptop (the laptop lost two pounds, and lowered
its
cholesterol by 20%). Marty is an IBM-certified DB2 DBA, IBM-certified
Business Intelligence Solutions Professional, an Informix-certified
Professional, a Linux+ Certified Professional, and also holds AIX
certification. He can be reached at lurie at us.ibm.com.
3. Ed Long, Kronos, and Charlie Perkins, Fidelity Investments
(with an assist from other NEDB2UG IDUG attendees)
TITLE: “Top 10 (20?) Things We Learned at IDUG 2004”
SYNOPSIS:
Ed and Charlie will do a point/counterpoint presentation of what they
learned at IDUG. Ed will present the DB2 on zOS view; Charlie will represent
DB2 on Linux, Unix, Windows. They will also pull in opinions from other
user group IDUG attendees. This should be a very informative session
as IDUG was loaded this year. On the mainframe side, Version 8 was hot,
and on the distributed side, Stinger was in nearly every presentation.
Not only will you get two strong opinions (who us?) regarding DB2 new
features and directions, but you will get two sides of the story. This
should be fun (and educational)!
SPEAKER BIOS:
Ed Long is a long-time veteran of the mainframe database world. He has
deep experience in DB2 and IMS as both a DBA and developer. He has worked
for financial services firms, retailers and vendors. Never shy with
an opinion, Ed will have some very interesting thoughts on IDUG and
the mainframe DB2 futures.
Charlie has been involved in DP/IT for 32 years. He has been active
in data management since 1977 when he learned IMS (partly under Ed’s
tutelage!). He has worked on mainframe DBMS (IMS, IDMS, DB2 versions
2 through 6) and distributed DBMS (mostly as a manager) including Sybase,
Oracle and DB2 (from the fledgling Database Manager days on OS/2 to
DB2 Version 8 ESE). He can say a lot about DBMS; some of it is even
reliable.
