Should Your Next Warehouse Be On DB2 for z/OS?

Willie Favero (IBM)

Abstract:

In recent years there has been an increased interest in using DB2 for z/OS as the database of choice for data

warehousing. This resurgence is in part due to the introduction of new features and functions in DB2 Version 8

and DB2 9. But it also has a lot to do with the decreasing cost of doing business on System z, introduction of

new specialty engines, operating system improvements, and other hardware advances. This presentation will explore

these advances in technology explaining why they are important to you as you decide to move, create, or maintain

your data warehouse on the mainframe.

Biography:

Willie Favero is an IBM Senior Certified IT Software Specialist with IBM’s Silicon Valley Lab Data Warehouse on

System z Swat Team. He has over 30 years experience working with databases with more than 24 years working with DB2.

He speaks at major conferences, user groups, publishes articles, and has one of the top technical blogs on the Internet.

 

Best Practices for Database Security & Data Governance

Abstract:

Data breaches by both privileged insiders and hackers continue to threaten organizations of all kinds

(average cost per incident: 14M USD [Ponemon Institute]). At the same time, new regulations such as SOX,

PCI, GLBA, and data privacy laws outline clear consequences – ranging from monetary penalties to jail time –

for companies that do not implement tighter controls around sensitive information.

Biography:

Ron Ben-Natan is an expert on distributed application environments, application security, and database security.

An IBM Gold consultant, Dr. Ben-Natan has presented at larger conferences, such as CSI NetSec, Secure IT,

UK Oracle User Group 2006, and IDUG NA, as well as smaller venues, such as various MS SQL and Oracle user groups

and the Open Web Application Security Group.

Dr. Ben-Natan holds a Ph.D. in the field of distributed computing. He has more than 20 years of software development

and technology experience. Prior to Guardium, he worked for companies such as Merrill Lynch, J.P. Morgan, Intel, and

AT&T Bell Laboratories. In addition, he has authored nine technical books and numerous articles on technical topics,

including his most recent book, Implementing Database Security and Auditing.

 

Understanding Data Governance - Data Management

This will focus on addressing Data Governance challenges in two main areas:

I. Archiving Strategies to Support Data Retention, Security and Compliance Requirements

In this portion of the session we will explore the business and technical issues driving data retention;

the issues caused by data growth and suggested best practices and solutions for addressing these issues.

• Data retention and compliance requirements, as well as data strategies for compliance

• Managing data to meet the needs of the business without sacrificing performance and increasing costs

• Decommissioning and migration strategies to simply your infrastructure

• Options for increasing efficiency for business continuity and disaster recovery

• Discussion of analyst research and recommendations

II. Managing Test Data Effectively and Ensuring Data Privacy in the Testing Environment

This portion of the session will examine the full anatomy of a data privacy project as relates to the

implementations of the best practice of data masking.

• Data privacy requirements and strategies for compliance

• Best practices for removing, masking and transforming data in your testing environment

• Proven methods for reducing testing time and costs for launching new applications internally

Biography:

Eric Offenberg, CIPP and Product Marketing Manager at IBM, has established himself as a thought leader on

data governance, database archiving, enterprise data management and data privacy. With nearly 10 years of

technology marketing experience across industries, Eric is a regular speaker in live Webinars, industry

events and with media and analysts on behalf of IBM. He holds an MBA with a concentration in marketing

from Rider University and a BA degree in communications with a concentration in public relations from Rutgers

University.

 

Structure and Format Enhancements in DB2 for z/OS V9:

Universal Table Space & Reordered Row Format

Abstract:

DB2 9 delivers a brand feature that has generated considerable discussion. It's a new structure type called

universal table space. There is also a second enhancement that you may not hear as much about; a new storage

format referred to as reordered row format. Both of these will significantly improve your DB2 experience by

making a couple aspects of DB2 easier to manage. This presentation will give you the details behind how both

of these features are implemented, how to use them, and a look at a few things you cannot use them for.
