SQL Optimization - Visual Explain On DB2 For z/OS
David Simpson, Themis
Abstract:
Some things with SQL optimization have been the same for a long time. Others are changing rapidly with the
introduction of Version 8 and 9. This presentation reviews the basics of access path analysis with extended
discussion of what’s new in the latest releases of DB2 on z/OS. The appropriate place for Visual Explain and
Optimization Service Center will also be covered. Let’s talk about what’s old, what’s new and how to make the
optimizer work for you.
Topics Include:
o Access path review
o The difference between “what” and “why”
o What’s new in V8
o What’s new in V9
o Visual Explain & Optimization Service Center
Biography:
David Simpson is currently a Senior Technical Advisor at Themis Inc. He teaches courses on SQL, Application
Programming, DB2 Administration, as well as performance and tuning. He has supported transactional systems
that use DB2 for z/OS databases in excess of 10 terabytes. David has worked with DB2 for 14 years as an
application programmer, DBA and technical instructor. David is a certified DB2 DBA on both z/OS and LUW.
David was voted Best User Speaker and Best Overall Speaker at IDUG North America 2006. He was also voted
Best User Speaker at IDUG Europe 2006. He presented at IDUG North America in 2007 and is also presenting
again in 2008.
Automating Remote DB2 Binds with CA-SCM for Mainframe (i.e. Endevor)
Rose Sakach, RSH Consulting
Abstract:
In a typical DB2 programming environment, a DB2 bind invocation is required whenever the DB2 source code has
been modified. This session will provide a brief Endevor overview and demonstrate the benefits of utilizing
Endevor to automate the DB2 bind function. In addition, we will examine how to achieve automation when the
DB2 subsystems associated with specific life cycle stages reside on multiple mainframe system images. Topics
include determining your DB2 environment, creating and utilizing Endevor symbolic parameters, and options for
coding DB2 bind statements. Sample Endevor processors and symbolics will be provided.
Biography:
Rose A. Sakach is a senior consultant and Endevor Practice Leader for RSH Consulting, Inc., a firm dedicated
to helping clients strengthen their mainframe and network controls by fully exploiting all the capabilities
and latest innovations in RACF and Endevor. Ms. Sakach has over 20 years of experience in information technology
including 10 years as a systems programmer and 13 years as a CA Endevor Administrator. Ms. Sakach has automated
the DB2 bind process under Endevor for past employers and clients and has given presentations on this topic at
Endevor User Group meetings and CA-World.
Ins & Outs of Distributed Processing for DB2 on z/OS
Bill Arledge, BMC
Abstract:
More and more DB2 application workload originates off the mainframe utilizing technologies like DB2 Connect,
Websphere Application Server, and others. This shift to increased distributed processing presents new
challenges in understanding and managing DB2 application implementation. This session discusses basic issues
about distributed applications, including distributed fundamentals, implementation considerations, problem
identification, and performance management for your DB2 on z/OS distributed applications.
Biography:
Bill Arledge is an IT veteran with 33 years experience across a variety of roles, including application
development and database administration. Bill’s database experience began in the late 1970’s as an IMS DBA
and developer. He began working with DB2 in 1984 as a database specialist at IBM. He worked with DB2
throughout the late eighties, consulting with numerous IBM customers on existing and planned DB2
implementations. Bill is a technical product manager responsible for BMC’s DB2 data management products.
In that capacity he continues to consult extensively with BMC DB2 customers and works closely with BMC’s
Research and Development organization to drive product direction.
